Make sure you book at least a hotel for your first night, because if you haven't booked you flight, out of experience I know it going to be hassle. Depending on where you're flying from, you'll be dealing with jet lag and you usually just want a shower and some food and hit the bed when arriving late.
Amsterdam itself has a lot of options to go see.
The Rijksmuseum has a great selection of the dutch history art and so does the van Gogh museum.
Tram line 5 will take you from central station to the museum district.
Early October can quite chilly already, especially at night, so be prepared.
Leidseplein, where the same tram stops, has great bars and restaurants. Check out boom Chicago if you like improvisation theater ( all in English).
What I do like is a small sushi restaurant at the turfsteeg, in between spui and Rokin,go right at the H&M there at a very small street, good prices andexcellent sushi.
Amsterdam has a great zoo to be checked too.
The city of Haarlem is worth visiting too, nice shopping, take the train there, it's only a 10 minute ride and take bus 73 or 75 from there at the back of the bus station, that one will take you there.
From Haarlem it's a short train ride to go to Zandvoort beach, nice for a walk and a drink and they have nice hotels there so you go stay overnight.
Take also a visit to Alkmaar, again very easy by train. across the railways station of Amsterdam Central is a toutrist info, they can get you 3 day public transport passes, far cheaper than buy singles all the time.

These are pretty good in finding tickets that are always cheap, not as good for last minute flights.
I always saw that my travel agent had a lot of last minute offers, (for when you want to plan a couple of days ahead.) I think most travel agencies have those offers.

I'm also going to Amsterdam next weekend 12th and 13th, I'm planning to get there and look for hostels, I have directions to a few of them – Stayokay Vondelpark, flying pig, Shelter City, Hotel My Home, winston hotel. Reviews are pretty good for these. I'm guessing they should accept visa.
I have travelled around europe before, u should be able to walkin and get a bed, even though the website says booked, few months ago in Frankfurt I found out that the online price was 5 euro higher than what I paid at the hostel.

Keep your money in your bank account, and use your bank card to get it out.
(Check that your card is ready for use abroad and what it costs.)
The rates will not be much different but when you use your card your fees will be lowest.
If you go to those money changers not charging a fee often give a lousy rate, so only use them when you want to change a small amount of money.
